It wasn't pretty, but Minnesota State defeated Minnesota Duluth 79-65 in a Northern Sun men's basketball game at Bresnan Arena on Saturday. The Mavericks never seemed threatened but had a tough time pulling away from the methodical Bulldogs until the final 13 minutes.
Jefferson Mason again proved that he is the best athlete in the conference, and Travis Nelson, who didn't start because he was late to a team meeting Saturday, provided 23 points in the post.
The Mavericks have a two-game lead plus the tiebreaker over St. Cloud State in the conference with seven games to play so it looks like the conference tournament is destined for Bresnan Arena. However, the Mavericks' main goal is to get the No. 1 seed in the region and the right to host the region tournament.
